Winnie Foster is a sheltered 10 year old girl living in the late 1880's. One day she sees a young boy, Jesse Tuck, drinking from a spring in her family's wood. When Winnie tries to take a drink, Jesse stops her and reveals his family's dark secret. Winnie is then faced with the option to change her fate.

The book is very descriptive and easy to visualize. I think this really helps the reader understand what is going on in the book. This is especially helpful because the book is set in an earlier time period so we might not be able to relate to what everything might have looked like then. The specific details do leave less up to the imagination, but help readers who struggle to make up their own ideas of what everything looks like.
