Setting/Plot

Do you think the story would have changed if it was written today? Why or why not?

I think the plot would definitely change if the setting was different. For example, pretend the story takes place in current day New York City. The Tucks would be constantly surrounded by so many people, it would be much easier for them to blend in. Treegap, is a small town where everybody seems to know everybody and I think this simple change of setting would make a big difference. And if the story was set in current times, the gallows would not be an issue, but perhaps the death penalty would be present in a different form.

I also think that the story would have changed if it was written today. I agree that it would have been easier for them to blend in in a larger city because there are more people. I do think that they would have a harder time finding job or finding places to live. When the story actually took place, getting a job didn't include filling out applications and an employer might want to do background checks and look up birth certificates before hiring you for a job. The same problem could come up when trying to find a place to live. The Tucks would have to come up with a way for people to not know how old they truly are. It is harder for people, especially a family, to slip through the cracks without anyone noticing in today's world.
