Characterization

Although the Tucks haven't changed in all these years physically, how have they each changed mentally? Which character in the book is most like you and why?

One character from the book is Jesse Tuck. Jesse was seventeen when he drank the water from the spring. His character is a very fun, free-spirited and worry-free young man. Jesse travels the world making enough money to get by and spends the rest of his days having fun and exploring the world. He seems to be enjoying his life stuck at age seventeen. Another character from the book is Miles Tuck. Miles is Tuck's brother and he was twenty-two when he drank for the spring. Miles is a hard worker and tends to keep jobs for a longer period of time. He also was married and started a family but they moved away when he did not age. Miles seems to miss having a family and would like to have grown old with them. He feels he his "stuck". Both characters seems to be stuck at the mental age of when they drank the water. I think I am most like Miles. I am a non-traditional student and feel that I need to finish school so I can provide a better life for my family. I want to go forawrd with my life and work hard to accomplish my goals.

I think that the character whose mentality changes the most throughout the course of the book is Winnie. At the beginning of the book, Winnie is sheltered and basically does everything she is told. Her mentality is never really stretched or challenged in any way. That is, until she meets the Tuck family. They show her both the good and bad aspects of the spring and their gift. Jesse loves the fact that he can never die and he loves traveling all around and doing new things. His father, on the other hand, despises the spring and he wishes that he had never drank from it. He knows that death is part of the circle of life and that it is meant to happen. At first, Winnie thinks that the idea of living forever is great, especially if it means that she can be with Jesse forever. Yet, she sees how sad and unhappy Tuck is and sees the other side of things. With this new discovery, Winnie's mind is stretched and challenged in a way she never thought possible. In the end, she must choose whether or not she will drink the water.
